Stress reduction and management are necessary elements of hormone balancing and healthy aging. For example, when your brain and body perceive stress, cortisol is released. Cortisol is one of hundreds of hormones that work in harmony to help your body respond, regenerate and thrive. Cortisol increases your heart rate, blood pressure, and blood sugar. It also shuts down digestion and diverts blood away from the skin to support your heart and muscles. Once the threat passes, all emergency stress systems are called off and things get back to normal, in what’s known as the relaxation response. Cortisol is only one example of one hormone in the complex biochemistry of the stress response.
When you’re chronically stressed, which 95 percent of Americans are, the relaxation response does not occur resulting in a whole host of hormonal imbalances and accelerated aging. Stress manifests differently in each of us. Some of us get headaches, while others have stomach pains, develop anxiety, depression, addiction, insomnia, or suffer from high blood pressure or inflammation. Most of the symptoms we call “normal aging” are in fact the result of chronic stress. No matter what the symptoms however, it all comes back to the way the body responds to stress and the subsequent hormone imbalance.
This is what you can expect from your stress-reduction session at Signature Wellness.
First, we will identify particular areas of stress in your life and become aware of your bodies unique response. Next, we will review modalities for stress reduction and you will be taught how to use some easy tools for relaxation. Next, you will be given a stress-reduction prescription that caters to your individual needs. Lastly, you will receive a take-home booklet of tools and information that have been successfully used by people just like you to reduce the impact that stress has on their health and well-being.
